A5 - Putting it all Together
Overview
In this assignment, you will have the choice of either downloading a sketch to start with, or sketching something of your own. Using a comibination of Krita tools on both paint and vector layers, you will trace the sketch, then colour it in. Finally, you'll use gradients in combination with alpha inherit to produce a lighting effect.
An ideal sketch would be an outline of something that would be easy to colour in.
You should appropriately name each of your layers, so that you end up with something like this:

Step 1 - Your Starting Sketch
Do one of the following:
- Download a sketch from online
- Create your own sketch using Krita or another digital tool of your choice
- Hand draw a sketch, take a picture of it, and import the picture
Keep this sketch in its own layer, right above the background.
Give it a name such as Pasted Sketch, and adjust the opacity of the layer so that it doesn't get in the way of your tracing later.
Step 2 - Trace the Sketch
Using some of the tools we've learned, trace over you sketch. These may include:
On a Paint Layer:
- The Circle tool (or other similar tools), in combination with the Tranformation tool to update its shape
On a Vector Layer:
- The Freehand Path tool, in combination with the Edit Shapes tool to update its shape
- The Bezier Curve tool, in combination with the Edit Shapes tool to update its shape
Your sketch will be on either one or two layers: a paint layer and/or a vector layer, depending on which tools you decide to use.
When you're done this step, you can make your sketch layer invisible.
Step 3 - Colour in the Sketch
For areas that are just going to be a solid colour, you can simply use the Bucket Fill tool.
If you want to do more than this, try this method:
- Fill the area with the bucket tool
- Enable the alpha-lock on that layer, to restrict your further painting to pixels that are already painted on the layer.
- Paint on the layer as you wish.
The number of layers you have for this step will depend on exactly how your are doing your colouring. If you're only using the bucket fill, you could probably do all your colour on one layer. If you want to add further detail to any areas, you might want to make it it's own layer that can be controlled with alpha lock.
Step 4 - Add in Lighting and Shadow
You can use gradients to add lighting and shadow effects onto your image. You should start by creating gradients in a top layer as shown below:

After you have this done, make sure to group all layers except for the background (the quickest way is to select all layers you want to group, then press Ctrl+G). Finally, turn on the alpha inherit for the top layer (the lighting) so that the gradients only cover your sketch.
