Culminating Activity
Part 1 - Reading
You may want to take a full period to do this part to get a good sense of some stage design techniques. Please have a look at each of the following:
-
Terminology - Go to this page and scroll down to the terminology section. Make sure you understand the following terms (and feel free to read some of the others if you're interested):
- Lantern
- Lamp
- Wash
- Intensity
- Gel - note: with coloured LED lamps like we have, gels are becoming obsolete.
- Gobo
Below this, under the heading Types of Stage Lighting Fixtures, make sure you understand the difference between an ellipsoidal fixture (which produces a focused beam) and a PAR can (which is used to create washes). The portable lights you've been using in the cafeteria mimic PAR cans. The incandescent lamps we have in the cafe are of these two types of fixtures.
-
Functions of Stage Lighting - Go to this page. The are five functions of stage lighting briefly described. I'm not too concerned about the modeling one, but make sure you have a good understanding of the others. You can click on each of these for more details. Please skim the details of each, which should give you a sense of what you might want to come back to later.
-
Elements of Stage Lighting - Go to this page. Again, just skim each of the five articles linked from here, to give yourself a general understanding of these.
Part 2 - Planning
Choose some sort of a play/musical/movie/story that you are familiar with. It doesn't need to be anything that has currently been adapted to the stage.
You will choose three scenes from your selection that you will be creating a lighting design for. Try to choose contrasting scenes, to allow you to take explore different strategies with respect to the functions and elements of stage lighting.
For each of your three scenes:
- Describe two or three functions of stage lighting you'd take into consideration for the scene.
- Describe, by taking the elements of stage lighting into consideration, how you light the stage if you had any technology you would like at your disposal.
- Describe how you would light the stage using the current technology we have at Eastview.
Feel free to include diagrams for these if you think it would help explain.
Part 3 - Lighting Implementation
Set up the lighting for one of your scenes on our stage. If we have enough time, you might be able to do more than one of your scenes.
