A2 - Basic Modelling

[ Video Resource ] - We'll follow through the video together in class, and mimic the creation in the video as we go along.

Key Points from Video

Shift-A -> Mesh -> Torus

  • Right after you add, go to the temporary Add Torus menu at bottom-left of screen.

    • 32 major segments
    • 12 minor segments
    • Play around with Major Radius and Minor Radius values until you get something resembling a donut
  • Right-click on donut – shade smooth (undo with shade flat)

  • Select donut, choose wrench to add modifiers

    • Add Modifier -> Generate -> Subdivision Surface (if the donut disappears, see 6 minutes into the video)
    • Increasing the Levels Viewport value by one divides each face into 4 faces
    • The Render setting does the same thing but only in rendered view. Generally want viewport to be lightweight, rendered view to look nice.
    • Leave at 1 and 1, which is fine with shade smooth

Select donut, Change Object mode dropdown near top-left to Edit Mode

  • Tab is hot-key to change between object/edit mode

Proportional Editing – hot-key O, or dot in circle icon near top-centre

  • Circle of influence appears when grabbing vertex
  • Scroll wheel to change size of circle of influence (or pg-up, pg-down)

Alt + click on edge will select the circumference of the edge

  • To flatten around the donut, turn off proportional editing, select the edge, and use the scale option
