A5 - Sculpting

[ Video Resource ] - We'll follow through the video together in class, and mimic the creation in the video as we go along.

Key Points from Video

  • Make sure the full icing is unhidden (ALT+H)

  • Double check meshes at this point to make sure there are no mistakes

  • If parts of the mesh have separated (1:07 in video) - Shrinkwrap modifier on icing, target is donut (move it to the top of modifiers). Apply it.

  • Apply icing’s solidify modifier.

  • Change subdivision viewport to 2 and render to 6, then apply.

  • Switch to sculpt mode (alongside object and edit modes)

  • Switch to inflate brush (I hotkey)

  • F hotkey to change brush radius (then move mouse)

  • Shift-F hotkey to adjust strength.

  • Inflate where icing accumulates (do little circles). Hold control to deflate (or switch + to – near top of screen).

  • Next use grab brush (hotkey G) and adjust – like pushing clay.

  • Choose Mask tool (M), set strength=1 (slider near top of screen), in the brush menu choose Front faces only – Paint where we want perimeter inflation to occur.

Note

Hot key – forward slash to view only selected object. This can be toggled on and off with forward slash.

  • Once drawn, CTRL+I to invert the mask.

  • Mask Menu -> Smooth Mask

  • Select Mesh Filter on the left sidebar, then Filter type (near top) should be inflate. Click anywhere, drag right to inflate. Check how it looks in object mode.

  • Back in sculpt mode, Mask --> Smooth Mask. Click and drag right and left anywhere on the icing to adjust.

  • Sculpt Mode -> Mask Menu -> Clear Mask

Note

Holding down SHIFT anytime in sculpt mode will temporarily activate smoothing.
