A6 - Shading

File Download for This Assignment

There is part of the video where it asks you to create an account on a website to download a file. Instead, you can download that file here. You will need to unzip the file after downloading it.

[ Video Resource ] - We'll follow through the video together in class, and mimic the creation in the video as we go along.

Key Points from Video

  • Go into rendered view.

  • Select icing, material tab, add new material

    • Choose a colour for the icing
    • Set roughness to around 0.3
  • Give base of donut an appropriate colour in the same way

  • Add a plane which will become the countertop. Scale it bigger to make it feel roughly the size of a countertop in relation to the donut's size.

  • Parent the donut/icing – select icing, then SHIFT to also select donut, then CTRL+P. Select Object (keep transform)

  • Download this file to the same folder as your blender file, and unzip it.

  • Back in Blender, select the plane, materials menu, dot beside Base Color, then select Image Texture

  • Under Image Texture, click Open. Select the 2K/Poliigon_StoneQuartzite_8060_BaseColor.jpg file within the folder you just unzipped.

Optional Section

This is a little more advanced, and only makes a subtle difference. You'll need to watch the video to really understand what is meant in these steps:

  • Click on the Shading tab at the top. Close two left-hand windows (see 8:00 in video)

  • From roughness node, add Image Texture – Color, then open file and select roughness file.

    • In colour space, select non-color
  • From normal node, add image Texture – Color, then open file and select normal file.

    • In colour space, select non-color
  • Add a new node before normal. Shift-A -> Vector -> Normal Map.

  • Texture Paint – go to texture paint tab; forward slash to isolate donut

  • Donut materials –> dot beside base color -> Image Texture (will go black)

    • Select New; name it donut base, pick colour, click OK (or might say new image)
    • Click image icon near top left and pick donut base
    • Might need to zoom out of left hand image
  • Go to foreground colour menu, use eye dropper to match colour of donut, then lighten it up a bit

  • (Not in the video) - Change the brush from Paint Hard to Paint Soft

  • Decrease brush strength

  • Draw ring around the middle of the donut

  • Save image
