A1 - Introduction to Cables and Data Transmission

We will start by completing this document as a class (clicking on the link will prompt you to copy the document template into your own Google Drive).

Assignment

Note

You can complete this is any software you'd like. My recommendation is Google Slides since it is easy to copy, paste, drag and drop text and images into the slides.

Part 1

Include (and label) images of each of the following connectors:

  • XLR
  • TS
  • TRS

Also, find (or create) one diagram of an XLR cable where the function of each pin is identified. The pins will be labelled something like ground/positive/negative or ground/hot/cold.

Part 2

Create "warning label" slides or graphics for each of the following. A diagram or image of some sort for each would be a nice touch.

  • "Avoid using quarter inch instrument cables for speakers. You'll damage your equipment!"
  • "Caution - Never plug speaker level signal into anything but speakers. You'll fry your equipment!"

Feel free to reword the quotes to your liking if you wish.

Part 3

Reproduce the Signal Levels chart we filled out in the Google Doc in a nicer way - perhaps using some sort of graphic, graph, or just a nicer looking chart.

Part 4

Search Google Images (or something similar) for volage current water analogy, and find an image that you think illustrates the concept well. Paste it in. Alternatively, as an extension, you could create your own diagram.

Evaluation Note

I'm not asking for anything overly artistic for any of this. The purpose of this assignment is to reinforce and think about the concepts introduced in the Google Doc. If you clearly put more work into any part of this than is called for, I will count it as an extension.
