A3 - Storing and Transferring Files

We will start by completing a handout as a class. After we've gone through it I will post answers at the bottom of this assignment.

There will also be four short follow-up activities. When you are done all four of these, call me over to your computer to show me.

Activity #1

  • Either create a new Google Doc (this could also be a slide presentation, spreadsheet, etc), or use an existing one you don't care about anymore.
  • Next, go ahead and sabatoge it: for example, "accidentally" remove a big chunk from it.
  • Finally, go into your Google Drive and see how you can restore the previous good version.

What to show me: Briefly show me the file you sabatoged, and the process you went through to restore the good version

Activity #2

  • Find or create a set of files or folders that you can zip and then send to a partner using a method of your choice.

What to show me: The identical zip file on your machine and your partner's machine, as well as the files unzipped on both machines.

Activity #3

  • Create a document in a popular software program, such as Microsoft Word. Save the file both in its default format and as a PDF.

What to show me: The file in both formats

Activity #4

  • Download WinDirStat, a small utility that will display the usage of files on your computer.
  • The download will be a zip file. Once you have it, you'll need to unzip it and open the application within the x64 subdirectory.
  • Try to figure out how to do a full file scan of your C drive, and investigate the results to see where most of your computer's storage is being used.

What to show me: The program after the full scan has finished running
